1 000 000 hits!

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 3, 2009, 6:10 PM
So here is the 1 000 000 mark! I just want to say that what i will put up is something that i have poured my heart and soul into and i hope you guys appreciate it. It should be within the next few days that I will be posting it so i just want to say a few things first:

1- Firstly any and all of my talent that I have is in the hands of Allah, that’s my belief, I don’t ask you to believe the same, but it wouldn’t sit right in my own heart if I didn’t say that first off. As a result I thank Him for any shred of talent I have and hope that I use it to its best capacity and improve on it throughout my lifetime.

2- You guys have really helped me improve as an artist, and though I have said it before, I will say it again: All of your comments and critiques, though sometimes they hurt (no I’m not emo)  I do take them as eagerly and serously as possible. Even if you can’t draw too well in your estimation, a mistake is a mistake on my behalf. So thank you for that.

3- The well wishing and encouragement I have received from you guys, again, is something that has pushed me forward and made me feel like someone out there actually likes my art for what it is or isn’t. Years I spent feeling I had to be something I wasn’t, and you have buried that menacing demon now for me with your kind words and compliments.

4- I have used commercial entities to gain fame and I am sure it has contributed to my success. It is my job to work on these properties, and for the most part you will find that material here. Especially Ibuki as of late heh. I have a lot more respect for people who made a million hits by their own art and characters. Right or wrong that’s how I feel about it.

5- I can’t say that from now on everything I will put up here won’t be  SF related, but as much as I am allowed to do and feel is safe I will put up my own personal work. Much neglected, much anticipated, there seems to be an opening on the horizon for my story to finally bloom and this is the thing I will share with you soon.

I think at the end of the day I have no guarantee as to how long I will live, and if I have a chance I would rather have died trying to do my own thing than to have just let be buried with me in my grave. I have to put food on the table for my wife and kid, and those priorities are first because I am not a rich person in that way, but where I can I do work on this hoping one day to release it.

So even if this is the only thing I do put up of my story, at least I tried and I hope Allah accepts all my effort.

Enjoy!

I really do thank you guys and I hope I have been of some use to you.

Asalaamu Alaikum = Peace be upon you!

That was incredibly well said, man.

Even if you attribute your success and fame to SF or whatever other commercial properties you draw to put food on the table, I don't think anyone can ignore the fact that you're a pretty badass artist - personally, I feel like you could have been drawing ANYthing to get you where you are now. I feel like there are definitely people on deviantart that have an abnormally large amount of prestige due to drama, community or simply one-hit-bandwagon-wonders (i feel like i fall into the bandwagon category), but I've never felt that you were padded in any way.

You didn't hadouken your way through the 1Mil mark, you arted through it! Cheers to that, fo sho.

Congratulations Omar.

Your talent is undeniable. You should never feel shame for using it to earn a living. In fact, being able to should be one of the highest compliments you can receive; especially for such a high-profile franchise as Street Fighter. I'm a massive fan of the Darkstalkers characters, and if you were not employed or commissioned to do work on this franchise as well, then perhaps I'd never have found some of my favourite pictures of them.

Keep up the exceptional work, ignore the bad comments, as they are vastly outweighed by the good, and draw more Felicia!

Congrats!

And I gotta say, of all the posters I have in my room, your Ibuki one's the only one I felt needed to be framed, whereas the others are in poster tubes...yeah it sounds kinda like I'm kissing up, but you did get me interested in Ibuki, before, I kinda looked at her as "that fun ninja chick from SFIII", but your drawings have so much expression to them, it's a little hard not to get swept away by the character you portray in your work...even your anatomy practice has character! :boing:

Though, it seems like the other day I remember Alvin Lee saying, "Check out Omar's page! He just made it!" and poof, now you're at 1 mil for pageviews.

Though, I do look forward to the idea of more of you doin' your own thing, since I think you're probably one of the few that has me interested in cars other than a means of point A to point B.

But yeah, I didn't really get a chance to say that at Comic-Con, as much as I'd like to, my brain seems to shut down in public...so I figured I'd get all the love out in one go. :P

Well said!

Just keep pushing onwards and never give up on your dreams :) You see, your talent may be a gift from God, but the determination to use it is all yours. And yes, I do believe the same - Muslim or Christian, we believe in the SAME one and only God, and always have... Same God, just different prophets sent to different nations, that's all. It's sad that many people in both religions forget that so easily :(

I'm not too familar with the Koran, but in our bible there's a record of a tale Jesus told his students. I hope you don't mind if i share it here, I think it applies rather nicely to what I'm trying to say here :) It's a tale of a master who departed on a journey, leaving a handful of coins (called 'talents';) in the care of his servants. The servants made use of them, invested them to try and make some profit for their master. Some made more, others less, but they were all happily praised for the effort upon the master's return. One of the servants, however, just hid his coin away in safety so that he would return it just the way he got it. This one servant got severely scolded, to say the least.

Now if we make an analogy, and regard the "master" as God and the servants as humanity, it all makes sense - we were all given some 'talents', sometimes greater, sometimes smaller, sometimes more than one (ours would be drawing skills). And the meaning of the teaching was that we should all try and make the best of them. USE them. Not hide them away in a hole in the ground. They're a gift from God, afterall, and we were probably given them for a reason, whatever it may be.

Well, I just thought this compliments and expands your thought from point one nicely. I hope I didn't offend you in any way by bringing it up.

So, like I said, just keep following your dream, whenever life permits. use your talent, do what you love doing. In the end, even if it'll take you through some hardships, you'll be happy :)

Oh, and perhaps i should have actually started this post with this, but better late than never - I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the time you spent talking to me and my wife at FanExpo, offering us great advice, and letting us observe your drawing :) Thank you very, very much! once again, you've been a huge inspiration.

I was rather neglecting my drawing over the past two or three years... and that's a bad, bad thing. But finally I've gotten back to work on my next manga for Kasen Comics (I'm scared to think how long overdue it is), redrawing most of what was already there since I improved considerably. That was right after I started reading Udon's SF series. What an inspiration it was and continues to be. And finally meeting you in person and talking to you gave me a farther boost! I have a bunch of pieces in the works now - There's the unfinished Chun Li piece which still needs tons of work on the background - When you saw it, it only had the flattest colors aplied over basic lineart, and still has miles to go. There's a funny fight scene pic coming that I think will be quite enjoyable, and finally another, simultaneous comic project - I had a fantastic idea that i just HAVE to pour on paper or I'll just go crazy :)

And it's all your "fault" ;)

For that, once again, thank you! You're fantastic :)

thanks for stopping by!

We have something similar in Islam, simply stated:

The miser is the biggest loser: In this life he doesn't spend what he has and benefits no one including himself, and in the next life he is chastised for not sharing it or using it.

Hm yeah trying to do your own characters or your own interpretation of something is definitely harder than trying to simply reproduce an advertisement for Cap-com lol. I tend to have two views on it . Commercial entities can act as mythology or what use to be folk tales and fairy tales before the creation of the idea of a corporation . Though most artist rarely develop there own take on characters and flesh it out . It anin't easy to do it on your own ,keep up the work.

Well put, man. Well put.
You deserve all the attention.
Not only are you an amazing artist, but you are a great person as well. I know we haven't ever talked, but I can tell that you are a great person just by what you write and what you state as your priorities. It's good to see that you appreciated how much us watchers have done for you. Because it's true. Being watched really makes you feel liked, that people like the things you make. And it encourages you to continue on with that. So good job man. And Allah bless. :D

Please don't be afraid to show us your personal work. Yes, it's true that people are drawn to commercial characters initially because in a sense they can relate to them more than original characters, but I can guarantee you that almost all your watchers watch and respect you for your talent. All I know is that I watch you because your art contains not only technical skill, but charm.

I would absolutely love to see your original ideas start coming out, and I'm sure no one in their right minds would think otherwise. So, when you have free time, do you what makes you happy without worrying about its reception. c:
