Black Friday

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 27, 2010, 4:28 PM
I went down to NJ for the passed few days and returned this morning at 4 after a long 8 hour drive.

Black Friday is a pseudo-holiday that seems to be increasingly starting on Thursdays, now called 'Grey Thursdays'. I went with my Bro in Law to Toys R Us at 10pm on the Thursday, and though it was like 3°c / 39°F, like clock work cars rolled into the parking lot as if on cue, and people with buggies formed a line at least 1 km long.

SO they just let the doors open at the Toys R us and people fly in and thats it right? Not when you have a fire marshal there. So 20 people at a time went in while the line just continued to grow.

In Canada its a totally different story, we have something called Boxing day on the 26th of December which is an actual statutory holiday and things are on sale at huge discounts after X mas.

ANy body have a funny Black Friday story, plug below:

On another note:

Commission progress:

So far i am over halfway through all of them, I am looking to have it completed this week.  If I have finished yours you have been notified, I will be sending all the packages out at the same time.

It looks like i will be opening for commissions tentatively in the second week of December. I will have some new pricings and some promotions as well.

I really do thank you guys and I hope I have been of some use to you.

Asalaamu Alaikum = Peace be upon you!

Why is it called Black Friday? Did something bad happen that day?

A man was trampled last year and killed, employees at the store tried to help and get the area clear for the paramedics to arrive, but the customers would not cooperate. None of them cared someone was dying, they were too busy shopping. I'm glad they're taking precautions to make sure something like that doesn't happen again.

Grey Thursday? Wow, I remember back when the day before Black Friday was called "Thanksgiving."

What is this "Thanksgiving" you speak of? I asked all the stores and they have no idea... are you sure it's between Black Friday and Halloween?

For that matter I remember when Christmas didn't start in October (or earlier)

I work security, so nothing funny, just depressing. Baby sitting hundreds of adults in a line at 1am is not fun.

Wow... Boxing Day sounds pretty nice actually... I'd just ask for straight up cash for Christmas, and go from there then. Damn me and not living in those cool areas...!

Though it does seem like Toys R Us was pretty busy this past thursday-friday. My parents ran into a similar issue when they went up there. Line was already wrapping around the building when they arrived at like 10:30-11pm, so they said screw it. That Buy one Game, get one for 5 deal must of been pretty popular, since its the first time I've heard about them having such a back-up.

The biggest line was in the electronic section, and only 2 tellers. the line snaked and weaved through the aisles.

I used to work as a manager for Walmart and black Friday was the worst day of the year for me, however, sometimes it was a load of fun. Pushing, running, swearing, these were just a part of the experience. I remember one particular customer, he has gotten his hands on a computer we had at a super low price (we were losing $200 for each one we sold). He was so happy he was actually crying as he left the store.

Went to take some pictures of the 1/4 mile long line @ the local Toys R Us, hit up the Wal-Mart where people ended up hoarding movies/games like zombies and pushing people left and right (with the cops watching and laughing.)

Made off with a deluxe blu-ray, two games and a crockpot for 30USD.

Crockpot alone is over 30USD, don't ask me how I know that...

This was a tiny crockpot, not a huge one. Something to make good Nachos with lol.

I'm guessing shopping with the wife eh ? :)

That sounds about right doesnt it? Though I know in most cases you arent allowed to return things on Boxing day, at least in the busy stores I have heard they discourage it.

Yeah, typically they don't take returns until after New Year's.

We have Boxing Day in Australia too.
I'd never even heard of Black Friday until his year O_______o
And my family is from the US lol.

We have Back Saturday here, but it's a memorial day NOT a shopping/sale thing.
So the name confused me a little...
