Is it just me, or

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 13, 2014, 1:38 PM
Has dA become a totally entirely different  thing than what it was?

Seems like the normal crowd that used to follow me has either moved on to something else, or dissipated altogether. It might be that I haven't really done anything SF related in a while and just Momo stuff for almost 2 years.

If there is a site I should be on, which should it be?

I really do thank you guys and I hope I have been of some use to you.

Asalaamu Alaikum = Peace be upon you!

I just rarely say anything anymore. But I still enjoy looking at your work. If you find a good spot to migrate to, let us know?

I started watching you because of the SF fanart but what kept me around is that I absolutely love your style of painting and characters poses. Then once you started doing real life paintings, serveral cars and focused on 5C I became even more blown away. You're still one of my top 3 favorite artist I admire and I'll follow you no matter where you post your art. I'd like to stay here and expand your art elsewhere.

it kinda saddens me to read all these comments, cus i'm kinda new on DA... :(

dA is constantly changing, it never stays the same and always caters to whatever's popular, which is usually fanart. I'm not really sure about the people following you, but you're pretty spot on if you believe that some people have stopped watching you because you haven't done as much fan based work as opposed to your own, as those kinds of pictures tend to draw in bigger crowds. At the end of the day though, it's a good way to weed out the casual fans and have a more grounded, loyal fanbase that's there for your art and your talent, as opposed to specific content you produce.

I mean, don't get me wrong, people are free to enjoy whatever art they're here for, but I personally prefer following artists who produce more original works than fanart.

I feel like dA's a different place indeed. The stacking of images has removed some of the incentive to actually view them. So I've intended to read your comic every time I see the journal, but I keep postponing it. I only get to view a few images at the time before I move on to other stuffs.
Always loved your work though.

If I had to guess I'd say part of it was you telling everyone you were leaving dA a while back to exclusively use Facebook. Then when you returned to put up a bunch of 5th cap stuff you made it so people can't comment on it. Probably at very least doesn't encourage the same kind of rally of support you had in your dA Prime.
JiveGuru Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014
I've never noticed a change... actually I have. I've gotten a bit of a better response lately; Of course, I'm just small-time so anybody bothering to look at my stuff is a bonus to me.

Good point...

Hmm, I wouldn't suggest leaving DA, but adding a couple sites could help your reach.
Tumblr will reach a lot of people and the re-blog feature is handy.
On Facebook it's easier to share things virally (since they're so good at making sure everyone sees everything you're can come in handy at times..). If you upload any images make sure they're super small and watermarked, in case they get iffy with their copyright usage.

For both these sites you can set a click-through link/direct link back here to your DA, or even your own website.
I wish there was a magical site for artists that was clean with a good layout (and color scheme), user friendly with a good mature audience but still laid back not snobby, and still have great networking, but ah, that's asking for a lot these days.

I'm glad it's not just me! Yes, this place seems dead now. All the old crowd has gone away. I'm guessing Tumblr and Facebook like everyone else is saying, otherwise, no idea. So yeah, by all means share your stuff on those sites too, it can't hurt, but I'd recommend keeping one eye on DA incase they come back :)
Anths95 Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
It does seem to have changed a bit; it's mostly just deader and there appear to be more talented artists leaving (or more subpar artists like myself drowning them out a bit). I believe I signed up right in the middle of this exodus :P I can't suggest a better place though, sadly; Pixiv has massive levels of talent but is difficult for English-speakers to use, Tumblr's format seems too blog-like to actually be an effective place to share art, and Facebook isn't an ideal place for art either, although I am following more and more artists on there lately.

ya  i feel the same way because of facebook, tumblr, the crowd dispersed, its quite sad as fb was the one who has one of the greatest interface to contain them all

I follow artists here mostly, but hey, I haven't been here that long. But I also follow my faves on Facebook and Tumblr as well.
ZakOnestar Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014
I agree with what DarkerEve Stated.
Since you guys have been here for many more years than myself you may feel this site is changing/not the same/ghosting in a certain way. But overall, the love  and passion artists show here is still the best.

I see Artists who have dA also make a Facebook and Tumblr but its not really that passionate there. Tbh people share your photo/reblog it and move on in a way - don't get me wrong they truly appreciate the time and effort and beauty of your artwork but its not going to be the amount of passion you would get from a community that is centered around Artists.

Its kinda like that old quote i saw somewhere a long time ago. "dA is a made by Artists for the Artists." The same could be said for Pixiv aswell but overall its where you feel "at home" with your artwork.

I also second what Darker said. "Don't move to another site"    but if you Feel the need to explore and open another site. Don't leave us here on dA. Your art is indeed inspirational. it'll be heartbreaking to see you leave Omar-Dogan

Ignore the doubters, Deviant Art is forever!
Devastatr Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014

I follow artists on Facebook, and watch artists on Deviant Art. Both are daily most of the time. Change is inevitable. I like that you can see different times in an artist's career by looking at their body of work in the feed here moreso than on Facebook. I will occasionally look at Tumblr or Reddit to follow certain artists or "franchises". Art is such a subjective thing, I don't know many people that follow comics, video games, card games and artists that work in these genres the way that I do. I think using more sites the better just to get your work out there.

Please keep posting here.

It's likely more that you're not doing the SF stuff.  I'm still watching ya though. :D
Thesis-D Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
People's interests change and they move on. It happens. The fact it's happening to someone of your talent is sad, because you've always had something interesting to offer, and you present it in a fresh way, even if the subject matter is not (in the case of fan art).

It's nothing you've done wrong. In fact, you're doing all the right things: you're not limiting yourself to fanart, you're being original, and you're making a comic. If I were you, I wouldn't worry that some of the folks that were 'Street Fighter only fans' of yours are dwindling; that's to be expected when you don't cater to a cliche as much. It's no different when artists who are known for one thing and try something else notice a dip in traffic. I'm virtually no one here, but even I notice the difference in what little attention I get when I do say backgrounds and scenery versus the typical anime thing I would normally do.

What you might lose in one area you will gain in another, namely in your comic. SF is still a big draw, but you're acquiring a new audience with your comic as well as sustaining the audience you already had that would have followed you regardless of what you draw. You're not losing and you're not breaking even (even though it may seem that way). You're getting ahead and have a growing audience the more you keep up with your new projects; this will take time because it doesn't have the base that fanart does by default, but this will be more rewarding for you, I think, if you stick with it, since you're building something from scratch.

People just need time to get adjusted to your new ideas and stories. Give it time. :)

Maybe is not as always was before but I still feel this site strong, and for us artist is still the best place, I have a Facebook more for Obligation that anything else, and others site not have the same traffic of art lovers like DA have even if is little lower, is worst in others places, at least that's my opinion, your work is always inspiring and will be a shame not see your awesome art posting in here so please not move to others sites.

Well said, i really feel sooo bad whenever an artist decides to close their gallery here and go elsewhere.
DarkerEve Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2014
Totally agrees with you, and I really don't understand why, this place is still the best when it comes to art, I just hope not happen in this case with Omar he is great and still pretty popular in this site.
MREcartoonist Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I think the issue is, if you start off drawing mostly fan art, and eventually just shift over to other stuff, those of your watchers that were only there for the fan art move on. It is really common actually. I know several other artists that have had the same issue. However, it isn't all bad. Those of your watchers that stick around, are the ones that truly support you, because they love your work in general, not just the fan arts. Plus now, you will attract supporters that love your art outside of the fan art spectrum.
imagni Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014
I agree, DA is a bit of a ghost town lately, but there again I don't really log in as much anymore. I found that a lot of people moved to Tumblr. I get the most feedback on Facebook. It seems to be the place you interact with people the easiest/the most is where your community will grow.
DarthSkooba Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Professional General Artist
Does seem to be harder than, say, sites like Instagram of Facebook to really get your stuff out there and connect with people. I cant see what other people are 'liking' or doing on here so I only know what pops up in my feed and the only way I get my art seen is by pimping it to 20 different groups. So I don't think you're alone on this one. Almost seems like they're not even trying to keep up with social media outlets.
Soulbrotha Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Nope, I'm still here. I just don't comment as much.

I agree dA is different than it used to be, but it's hard to put my finger on the reason why. I think it's because the focus seems to be less about showcasing art and more about keeping up with the other social media sites. I understand why that's important, but I don't always like the decisions that are made. I also think the dominant demographic is changing. When I joined, the dominant fandoms were things that I liked: DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, Street Fighter, and so on. Now, it seems to be completely different. I can't even ID half the fanarts that are on the front page. I hate to sound like the guy who says "Darn kids and their new things," but that's really how I feel sometimes. That, and a lot of guys I started watching, like you and Alvin Lee, don't post so often anymore. I also liked doing contests, but now it seems like 99.9% of the contests are the Draw-My-OC variety, which I've always looked as a cheap way of trying to commission 50 people for the cost of 2 or 3.

On the other hand, I have found new niches to hangout and interact with other artists, and I've definitely found a lot of artists to watch who draw what I'm into. I guess it's just all about adjusting to the changing times.

Having said all that... please don't leave dA. I enjoy seeing your art here, and I'm sure the rest of your watchers share that sentiment.

Its not you, DA has been going downhill :/
hyunit Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
it's different definitely. I think it's because quite a lot of big artists moved on or stopped being active like they used to. Lack of these people, who practically helped build this community and created that "golden age of dA", kinda marks the downfall i guess...

Another thing could be the influx of new users if last years. The ratio of pro and casual users/artists just went nuts and as a result... weird frontpage, not enough quality content, lack of interest in general as it got more popular.

Though i don't know about any other similar site for art (excluding the specialized ones with almost elite content - dribble, cghub, etc), so yeah... I saw peopl emoving to FB, I made an account but it's honestly terrible for uploading any images at all x_x I guess it's better for communicating with your viewers. And tumblr is just a gif/reblog fest, not sure why people move there.
Art-Eater Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Student Digital Artist
I know a lot of people are into Tumblr now... but I don't like it near as much as DA. I think tumblr needs to be more organized..
PhunPhishTiger Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I've always looked at your work and enjoyed it (though the SF stuff is a bonus), I'm just notoriously bad at commenting/faving. I do think there have been changes, but I also still believe dA is the best community site to host your art overall. It's the only one I bother to use for that reason, even though I personally don't get much in the way of feedback or views. :XD:

Either way, keep up the good work!
Hedrick-CS Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014   Digital Artist
Same feeling here! I asked it to my watchers quite a while ago but no one seems to know. Lately I get a WTF regain fo activity from nowhere,
Deviant art as changed in a bad way with some stuff like Frontpage, whitch give an awful impression to a newcomer (in a certain way, the "deviant" work makes sense now... ), but I think people mostly get to use tumblr because, you know, "fandom gif reblog stuff"...

I Don't think it's because of your work because they're great, as always. ^^

I do like dA and I follow yah e_e but there is also Pivix, that place is cute too (maybe it's because that is not green that I feel it diferent, because it is not really very diferent in oher stuff :0 )

I've been noticing a lot more change is who is trafficing DA normally. While I still have most of my usually viewers they are commenting less or on different pieces than I thought they would like. I have lost some and gained new people. While I am on Tumblr I am still getting more interacting here than there.
Maphisto86 Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014
I still like Deviantart well enough, but there are plenty more websites for people who either want to leave and host their art somewhere else. That . . . . and heck I never comment. ^^;

It's now just you, It has definitely changed. There are many factors as to why people are not using it as much though.

In order to follow certain artists Who have left DA, I've had to sign up for accounts on many sites such as tumblr, Instagram, pixiv, blogspot, etc....

I thnk personally there is now more viable choices then there used to be if you don't like DA.

...however the last group I was in got flooded by Slashfic, Furries, and those kind of Pony lovers that really stretch NSFW to OMFGWTFNSFA(nyone)

I have the same feeling. Honestly I have the same stats than several years ago and far less than two years ago. That's kinda despressing. I don't interact well with other artist and DA was a site who made that rather easy, as for discovering artist, so it's a little sad (and feel like more complicated with tumblr or facebook IMO).

Yes devinatART has change. you can see from the silly works you see on the front page.
You have a  point. for a fanartist like me. my fans only expect me to draw the fanart of the animes they know. when your not drawing what they want they probaly won't care about the rest of your art.

to me stay on dA but you can find places like pixiv or shadowness. and share your art there :)
fox-orian Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
To be fair, hahah, DeviantART ALWAYS had silly top artwork on the front page. And I've been around here for 10 years. I've seen it all.

Very true XD
But before I did see alot of good works on the front page....but these days are the worst.
Ya know it's just as they say.the good artists don't get any feedback.
