Ramadan! 1431 / 2010

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 9, 2010, 7:29 AM
Ramadan Kareem! / Blessed Ramadan!

Ramadan will start here in Toronto on either Wednesday  August 11th or Thursday 12th depending on moon sighting. Moon sighting committee for the Toronto area: www.hilalcommittee.com/ .

So what's Ramadan?

A quick explanation for those who have never heard of it, this is the month in which all the eligible Muslims are encouraged to fast from food drink and if they are married sexual relations from sun up till sun down for 29 or 30 days of the lunar calendar. Eligible means men and women who are over the age of about 7, are not sick, or traveling, or in women's instance have their menstrual cycle, pregnant, or in some cases breast feeding.

We do so primarily to gain an awareness of Allah, but among the other benefits is that we can understand the hardships of poor people, we shed extra weight, and clean out the system of pollutants. Its also a time of solidarity and sharing food when we do break fast. We visit each other more often and go to the mosque to pray for many hours in which the whole community is there. For us it is a very happy time focused on community.

Of course it is difficult at first, but the blessings are huge and many great things always seem to happen each year to me and others. The lunar calendar moves around the solar year by shifting back 13 days a year. Next year Ramadan will begin in late July 2011.

We are told that fasting is the highest form of worship since only God really knows if you are being true to it or not. You can fool other people or cheat, but then you are only starving yourself. Its only if you're honest and really try that you reap the tremendous rewards. When you see so many people; old , young , rich , poor, all of them fasting worldwide, you can't help but feel a brotherhood as we're all doing it together.

I don't really know of too many other things out there nowadays that are telling you to avoid your desires and to abstain for about a month and on a yearly basis. If you can control food and sexual desires, the most base and universal, the rest are a lot easier.

The prayer of a fasting person is always answered if God wills, so pray for the sick, poor, and oppressed people world wide as well as for your families and your deceased relatives as well. Make as best use of this month as you can as good deeds are multiplied many fold! People misunderstand Ramadan as a hardship, but its actually a huge gift for us to gain Allah's favour which is better than anything we miss out on during Ramadan.

So to one and all i wish you a Blessed Ramadan, and even encourage non Muslims to try fasting and see how it's like, its a great was to break addictions and bad habits. If you're not Muslim, but have a Muslim friend, try going to their house for Iftar (when we break fast after sunset), they would be happy to have you and you will leave with a full stomach and a new understanding on something 1/6th of the world's population celebrates!

I really do thank you guys and I hope I have been of some use to you.

Asalaamu Alaikum = Peace be upon you!

Christian... not really devoted to God, but I know the Devil is out there.
But you know what? I think it's a great tradition to not eat for some periods and even not have sex. It just makes everything taste better after... And it is a nice way to lose weight :D
Who knows, maybe it's how it started: to prevent sexual transmited desieses or to lower populations consumption of goods.
I hope I'm not offending anyone - I'm just saying

It's always very interesting know some different cultures, specially in terms of religion.
I don't know much about it, since i never left the my state.
I agree with this part: "when we try to fool the others (and God) we are only fooling ourselves. I only know people who are Catolic or Evangelic, but i sure will be very fun to know someone, some day, of another religion.

I hope you had a great celebration.

i thought only those of us who are akil baligh or have reached the age where they are considered teenagers which is mostly 13 for boys and 10 - 12 for girls are eligible for fasting in the muslim calendar.. which i cant remember exactly since i didnt concentrate in class.

:wow: Salaam Alaikum! Ramadan Mubarak to you as well. May you and the family have a lovely and blessed month of fasting.

I was really surprised and happy to read this journal and learn that you're a fellow Muslim :la:! I have to say you have written the explanation brilliantly, especially considering if a non-muslim is reading it. I'm really glad you've written it. Thank you!

A happy Ramadan to you! As a Christian, it pains me that the current state of the world seems to be Christians Muslims and Jews all killing each other, when actually we share much in common (including the entire Old Testament) and have historically lived in peace. The movie Rambo III (made in the 80s) is "dedicated to the freedom fighters of Afghanistan," (because we were allies against the Russians at the time), but 30 years later everyone in Afghanistan is a "terrorist."
It's a sad state of affairs that is totally changeable depending on the year.
I hope for peace and understanding in the future, but I'm sure the politicians will be there to mess it up for us with their money making agendas. Bah.

That's a beautiful way to remind oneself of the poor and oppressed. I wish we had something like that in other religions, it'll humble us.

It's good when God's children are under one mindset and in one heart. To have everything in common is a great virtue for those who love God.

Reminds me a bit of what we do for Lent, though not quite as strict (though as you say, what you do or don't do is judged by God no matter how well you can fool others of your actions or intentions.)

We should always strive to fight addictions and bad habits, and learning to abstain from what's good is a big help.

Peace be with you, Omar.

And you cannot drink anything.
During the day (from sunrise to sunset) we dont do any of these. After sunset, we can eat.

Thanks for the clarification :)

Eat and drink I presume? I assume that ends at sunrise?

:iconpandamari:

Yes, basically you wake up before sunrise to eat and drink. Then when the sun rises, you can't eat or drink anything until the sun sets, which is when you break your fast. ^_^

Sorta. Basically, if you're sick enough that you have to take medication during the day, then you shouldn't be fasting. You can skip days from sickness, you just need to make it up later by either donating to the poor, or just fasting on a later day.
