So I finally started doing some timelapses of the way I work!
Heres a 15 min vid on part of the process for Pepper - mainly polypainting with a little bit of sculpting etc.

Im a 3d Character Artist, why do i need 2D skills?I was asked this a couple of times recently from students, thought i would share my thoughts here with you guys n girls.
My answer consists of 2 things:
1. Because 2d helps to rapidly build a visual library of self-knowledge in your brain, which ultimately through focus and repetition translates into 'artistic instinct'.
2. Because 2d is much faster to iterate with, enabling more rapid development of 'artistic instinct'.
Have you ever noticed when watching a master artist at work, that the subject seems to come alive so quickly, or that meaningful lines, shapes or silhouettes jump out right away, and then think:
'They seem to know exactly what shapes to put where, how to nail the composition so quickly, how to draw everything perfectly, without even thinking about it!!'
This is artistic instinct.
What you are watching is an artist call upon their whole lives worth of visual library development and self-knowledge, expressed using their 'artistic instinct' in the form of the subject.

Some Simple AdviceBizzarely, as if the universe just went 'okay people - ask now!' Just in one day today ive has so many pm's from various boards and whatnot from young / new artists asking me about what the secret is, how do I get better, what can i do, or i wish i could make stuff like you.
My advice is actually pretty simple. I gaurantee if you do this repeatedly everything else will take care of itself.
Step 1: Make some time for making art.
Step 2: Get everything prepared before hand, drinks, snacks, music - whatever you need to see you through the next couple of hours for your personal art jam.
Step 3: Unplug your internet.
Step 4: Make art.
I think too many people, especially young artists trying to find their way are looking too hard for something that doesnt even exist. Theres no secret formula, no awesome serum to drink. Just sit down and make art, and keep doing that over and over and over.
Free yourself of burden and distraction for that hour or couple of hours and just do it. Thats all it i

Online Maskmaking TutorialsI've spent the last couple years sharing a good deal of my self-taught techniques. I know most of you in this group have probably seen these already but it always bears repeating, & I'm going to take this opportunity to place all the links here in this one entry.

I'm including the rarely shared embarrassing Youtube video that my daughter Charlotte helped me make. It's what got me invited to the Martha Stewart show. I just realized, the only place I've linked it to is a friends-locked LiveJournal entry so it's a well kept secret. This shows how to make a simplified unicorn mask. I didn't do any carving because that's too complicated for most Sunday-morning crafters. Charlotte and I edited the heck out of it. This was a tutorial i did for Imagine FX last year and they have decided to put it on up on youtube.

It's 40 freaking minutes and is about how I go about putting together a comic/manga

awesome man. i learned alot from that. after meeting Alex Ross yesterday and watchin these vids i have some new techniques i'd like to include into my artist-process. so thanks.

its wierd, im a fan but i learned that we take very differant approaches to our art. like wildly differant. i wouldnt have guessed. like i never use the gradient tool and stay away from brushes mostly, but you've shown me they do have value - time to expand my repertoire and eperiment with those suckers.

one more thing. right off the bat, i noticed your characters didnt have the same treatment as your backgrounds. your BGs were markered in and more elaborate and your characters were pretty much only outline, aside from the hair and mouths. i dont recall you sayin anything about that - is there any reason you dont shade your characters with marker before the scan??? and is there a pt 5 vid?
